Foot Problems Q & A

How does pregnancy lead to or complicate foot problems?

When a woman is pregnant, her body undergoes an astounding range of changes. The weight gain that is required to create a human life can also lead to issues within the structure of the feet. While pregnant, a woman’s basic center of gravity is altered, which leads her to place pressure on different parts of the foot while walking. Overpronation can occur, where the foot is rolled inward while walking, and the arch is flattened. One of the most powerful treatment options for pregnant women with foot pain is the use of custom orthotics throughout the pregnancy.

How does toe position affect overall foot health?

Everyone has slight differences in the structure of their feet, and people can experience changes in their foot structure as they age and go through various phases of their lives. The position of the toes can be affected by problems in the toe joints, which can lead to foot pain. Overlapping toes is an example and occurs when the toe joints become so misaligned that the toes begin to rest on top of one another. Dr. Amar can address this condition with customized orthotics. In some cases, surgery can be the best treatment option.

How does diabetes impact foot problems?

Diabetes is a disease in which the body cannot produce the proper amount of insulin needed to function normally. People who have diabetes can also encounter a number of related foot problems. Most significantly, decreased circulation can make it difficult to feel sensations in the feet. That can lead to injuries to the feet that the patient is unaware of. Patients can also develop ulcers on the feet that are slow to heal or changes in the shape of their feet, which can lead to pain while wearing shoes and walking. It is important for people with diabetes to take a proactive approach to the health of their feet, and Dr. Amar can help customize a plan of foot care that includes orthotics and regular screenings.
